What’s the difference between High Performance, Passive House, and Net Zero?

High Performance buildings must meet certain standards for environmental impact, energy-efficiency, and occupant comfort. These structures are built with sustainable materials, and include passive design elements like optimized solar gain, use of natural light, and optimized HVAC systems that regulate temperatures and improve indoor air quality.

Passive House is considered the most comprehensive voluntary energy-based standard in the design and construction industry today. Passive Homes consume up to 90% less heating and cooling energy than conventional buildings, and the standards can be applied to almost any building type or design. The Passive House high-performance building standard is the only internationally recognized, science-based energy standard in construction delivering this level of performance. Passive Homes follow five principles which are central to Passive House design and construction: super-insulated envelopes, airtight construction, high-performance glazing, thermal-bridge-free detailing, and heat recovery ventilation.

Net Zero homes and buildings take sustainability a step further. Like High Performance and Passive Houses, a Net Zero building is also optimized for efficiency, but is also required to generate enough renewable energy onsite to meet its own annual consumption demands. This is commonly achieved with solar panels, superinsulation, airtight construction, geothermal heat pumps, and energy-efficient appliances.

The judges said, “The use of well-placed windows and the layering of exterior textures endow a wonderful sense of home while also creating the base structure for an efficient green design.”
